Decoding Actives: Retinoids, Peptides, and Botanical Antioxidants

Cellular Rejuvenation Through Seasonal Herbs

Medically reviewed by Dr. Rajendra Gawai, M.B.B.S

Skincare marketing speaks in miracles; dermatology speaks in mechanisms. Three ingredient families have earned their evidence. Retinoids remain the gold standard for photoageing, accelerating cell turnover and stimulating collagen production in the dermis. They demand patience — results arrive in months, and irritation in the first weeks is common.

Peptides are the diplomats: short amino-acid chains that signal skin cells to perform specific tasks, from collagen synthesis to barrier repair. They are gentler than retinoids and layer well with almost everything. Botanical antioxidants — vitamin C, green tea polyphenols, resveratrol — form the defensive line, neutralising the free radicals generated by UV exposure and pollution before they can damage collagen.

A sane sequence: begin with a morning antioxidant, add a nightly retinoid two weeks later at pea-size dose, and consider peptides only once the skin is settled. Introduce one active at a time, and never negotiate on sunscreen — every active on this list is undermined without it.
